Third phase of UP elections held today amid massive violence and rigging; Acting Secretary General calls for re-election
Saturday, 23rd April, 2016

Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 23rd April, 2016 protesting and condemning the massive violence, conflict, irregularities, rigging, vote robberies and massive captures of the poll centers in the 3rd phase of the Union Council election which has been held today.

“The third phase of the Union Council election has been held today in 614 unions amid massive violence, conflict, irregularities, rigging and vote robberies in order to secure the victory of the ruling party candidates. These incidents proved that no fair, credible and transparent election is possible under the current regime and its subservient election commission.

The countrymen have expected that the government and the election commission would do better this time as the first and the second phase of UP elections became extremely controversial for the similar violence, irregularities, rigging and vote robberies. But today’s irregularities again proved that the authority did not realize their previous wrong doings.

In the first, 2nd and 3rd phase of UP elections already 58 people have been murdered. Some 25 candidates of the ruling party Awami League have been elected uncontested in today’s 3rd phase of election. It should be mentioned that 96 Awami League candidates and 31 candidates have become winner in the 1st and 2nd phase of election. In the 81 Unions, no opposition candidate contested in the third phase of UP elections. Such an incident is unprecedented in the history of the country.

In a poll center of the Chor Sherpur of Sherpur district, 15 people have been wounded. On the other hand, in the attack of the Rajbari district’s Baniakandi Sadar union, independent candidate Khandaker Mashiul Alam and 4 other became bullet hit by the Awami League thugs. Voting has been suspended in the Khetshar poll center in the Comilla Sadar as 25 people became injured in massive violence. Ruling party hooligans hijacked 200 ballot papers from the Jakuniapara government primary school poll center of the Comilla Sadar Upazila and consequently voting has been suspended over there.

Voting has been suspended in the Saisanga Primary school poll center of the Faridganj in Chandpur district. Voting has been suspended in the Chunta Union AC academy of the Brahmanbaria district as the Awami League candidates hijacked the ballot papers. The Awami cadres gave fake voting in broad day light in the Panchasartia poll center of the Saidabad union of the Shirajganj district. Polling agents of the opposition candidates have been expelled from all the poll centers. The opposition has boycotted votes in 4 unions of the 7 unions in Natore district.

So the aforesaid pictures proves that today’s 3rd phase of UP elections have taken place amid violence, conflict, irregularities, rigging, vote robberies and massive captures of the poll centers. Fake votes have been casted in front of the election officials and the law enforcers. The election was not fare at all. It is just a mockery in the name of election which is destroying the public confidence and trust upon the electoral system as a whole.

I am urging the concerned authorities to hold re-election in those centers which witnessed severe violence, conflict, irregularities, rigging, intimidation and vote robberies during today’s 3rd phase of UP elections.
