Hamidur Rahman Azad denounces the unjust and unethical comments of Sajeeb Wazed Joy about Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir
Saturday, 16th April, 2016

Central Executive Committee member of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Hamidur Rahman Azad has issued the following statement on 16th April, 2016 protesting the remarks of Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the ICT advisor to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh and her son which he has posted on his Facebook status on 15th April declaring that ‘Jamaat-e-Islami is a terrorist organization. As terrorist organizations, Jamaat and Chhatrashibir should be banned.’

“The remark that Mr. Sajeeb Wazed Joy has made about Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir is completely untrue and demonstates his utter ignorance. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir are conducting politics and implementing their organizational activities in a systematic and democratic manner. Since its inception, Jamaat and Chhatrashibir have struggled against violent activities. Jamaat and Chhatrashibir have consistently condemned the actions of the so-called Islamic State, Al Qaida and other terrorist organizations. Jamaat maintains its position that there is no place in a democratic state for militancy and terrorism. Jamaat and Chhatrashibir condemn their actions and equally condemn the irresponsible statements trying to link a non-violent political movement with a brutal terrorist movement that has no connection to Islam. Nobody in home and abroad believes the comment of Sajeeb Wazed Joy and his party’s ministers. Despite the relentless propaganda of the government, Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir maintain their position as a legitimate political party that is opposed to all terrorist organizations. Sajeeb Wazed Joy’s remarks are baseless and irresponsible. His remarks concerning the arbitrary banning of these two organizations is without any legitimate or logical basis. Sajeeb Wazed Joy is reminded that he does not speak for the people and he does not exercise any executive authority.

Regarding the remarks of Sajeeb Wazed Joy, I want to state very clearly that, no member of Jamaat-e-Islami has joined IS. There is no question that any person who engages with the IS would be permitted to hold membership of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir. The entire comment of Sajeeb  Wazed Joy is entirely false and is solely intended to damage the reputation of a legitimate political opposition party. Mr. Joy has made this false statement as a continuation of the politics of falsehood and deception, which is owned by his party, Awami League. I am calling on Mr. Sajeeb Wazed Joy to assess the status of his own political party instead of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir. Then he will understand easily that the countrymen, and the international community, consider the ruling Awami League as an autocratic regime that is responsible for the arrest of political opponents, kidnappings, excessive use of force, torture in police custody, enforced disappearance and extra-judicial killings on a truly massive scale.

All the local and foreign quarters have acknowledged that the ruling Awami League, its front organizations like Jubo League and Chhatra League and the State Security Services are carrying out widespread arbitrary arrest, torture, enforced disappearance and extra-judicial killingsacross the country. The irony of Mr. Joy’s statement is that he is calling for a political opponent to be banned whereby the Government has waged a violent and disproportionate movement against any form of dissent.  The Government has also failed to maintain law and order and that is has seen a number of murders of secular activists and bloggers, foreign nationals and political opponents. Jamaat and Chhatrashibir condemn these acts and condemns the words of Mr. Joy that is only intended to divert attention away from his own Government’s miserable failures. It would be advisable for Mr. Sajeeb Wazed Joy to understand the reality as soon as possible.

Against this backdrop, I urge Mr. Sajeeb Wazed Joy not to make such irresponsible, illogical and objectionable comments about Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir without knowing these organizations properly.”
