Police arrests eminent journalist Shafik Rehman; Acting Secretary General demands immediate release
Saturday, 16th April, 2016
Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 16th April, 2016 condemning the arrest of eminent journalist Shafik Rehman from his residence this morning.

The government has arrested journalist Shafik Rehman unlawfully just to harass him politically. The present government has launched a repressive rule nationwide. During the current regime, the journalist communities are being oppressed and tortured excessively. The government has subdued the media and arrested one after one fair, uncompromising and efficient journalist.

During the tenure of the incumbent government, many journalists including the journalist couple Shagor-Runi had been murdered. Through naked interference, the authority had shut down several dissident TV channels and news papers. Such oppression and subjugation is truly alarming for a democratic society. No country can proceed amid such situation. Actually, a suffocating and deplorable condition is prevailing across the country. The United Nations and other international forums have been expressing concern about the current situation repeatedly but the government is not paying any heed to their call.

Eminent journalist Shafik Rehman has become another victim of government’s oppression. I am urging the concerned authorities to stop torture and suppression and to release him immediately.”
