Sunday, 14 August 2016

Two Bangladeshi nationals, including an Imam, were shot to death near a mosque of the Queens area in New York of US on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Imam Alauddin Akhonjee and his friend Tara Mia. Akhonjee was the imam of Al - Furqan Jame masjid of the Ozone Park area in Queens, New York. They were shot in the head from a small distance on their way back home after Johr prayers.

“The purpose of this killing is not yet clear,” deputy inspector Henry Sautner of New York police told reporters.

Although they were viewing the incident as a “hate crime,” the police did not rule out possibility of robbery behind the killing as the victims were pocketed with a few hundred dollars in cash. At the time of the incident both Alauddin and Tara were dressed in religious attires and had praying caps on their head.

The news of their murder sparked an outrage among the Bangladeshi community residing in Ozone Park area. The demonstrators believe this is an act of Islamophobia.
