Maulana Nizami's review hearing begins
Tuesday, 03 May 2016
The Supreme Court on Tuesday morning began to hear the petition filed by Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami seeking review of the top court’s verdict that upheld the death sentence given to him by Tribunal 1 in a so called case of crimes against humanity committed during the nation\'s independence war in 1971.   A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha is hearing the review petition.   On March 29, Nizami filed the petition mentioning 46 grounds in a 70-page appeal seeking acquittal from all charges on which he was found guilty and awarded the death penalty.   For committing alleged crimes in 1971, the SC upheld his death sentences on three charges and life term imprisonment on two other charges on January 6, 2016.   Earlier, Maulana Nizami was awarded the death penalty by the International Crimes Tribunal-1 on October 29, 2014. He was awarded life imprisonment on four other charges.   The date of the hearing was changed twice.
