Friday, 19 February 2016

The High Court issued a rule that from now on general public will have access to know about the income and expense statement of political parties from the Election Commission (EC).

An HC bench comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo delivered the verdict in response to a writ petition by the Sujan.

Advocate Sharif Bhuyan said that from now people can get any information from any public institution if they apply.

The people’s right to get information has been established, he added.

On June 12, 2013, Sushasoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan) Secretary Badiul Alam Majumder applied to the EC seeking info on annual income and expenditure of registered political parties.

But, the EC refused to give information then, Sujan Secretary moved the Information Commission with an appeal asking a directive on the election office. Then, the Information Commission also refused to provide information without securing consent from the political parties.

Later, Sujan leaders Badiul, Syed Abul Maksud, M Hafiz Uddin Khan, SM Shahjahan and Ali Imam filed an appeal to the High Court against Information Commission’s decision.
