EU delegation to visit Dhaka

A delegation of the European Parliament is set to visit Dhaka in February next to assess the current political situation, human rights and freedom of expression in Bangladesh.

In the scheduled 3 day long trip, EU parliament members will meet the Speaker, opposition leaders and civil society representatives.

A diplomatic source of Belgium claimed, in recent times, Head of the delegation Jean Lambert informed the European Parliament about visiting Bangladesh, while attending in a regular meet of the DSS, who are assigned to expand relationships with the South Asian countries. The 3 member team led by Jean Lambert would visit Bangladesh from 10th to 12th February. 

Since 2014, it is first that any delegation of the European Parliament is going to visit Bangladesh. Earlier, Lambert led another delegation in March of 2014 to see the the 5th January election post situation and status of RMG sectors after the collapse of the RANA Plaza building.

The proposed trip is going to be made after a proposal, which has been passed in the European Parliament in last November. In the proposal, European Parliament expressed concerned over the freedom of expression and press freedom in Bangladesh.
