Chhatrashibir activist died in prison following inhuman custodial torture, Acting Ameer condemns
Friday, 03 April 2015
Acting Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Maqbul Ahmed has issued the following statement on 3rd April, 2015 protesting and condemning the tragic death of Islami Chhatrashibir activist of Gaibandha district’s Gobindaganj Upazila, Shaharul Islam who has died in custody as he had experienced inhuman torture following his arrest.
“The law enforcing agencies had arrested Islami Chhatrashibir activist of Gaibandha district’s Gobindaganj Upazila, Shaharul Islam two months back. Later, they carried inhuman and brutal torture upon him. Though he became critically sick due to such torture, but instead sending him to the hospital for treatment, he was sent to the prison. Since then Shaharul had been remaining there without any treatment and finally he died this dawn.
He had become severely ill as he faced inhuman torture in the police station after his arrest. Shaharul’s family and relatives firmly believe that, he has died today as he had been denied due treatment and had been kept forcefully behind the bar. We do not have any word to condemn the arrest and the subsequent brutal custodial torture upon an innocent incident and afterwards his tragic death in the prison without any treatment.
I am asking the concerned authorities to probe into the intentional murder of Shaharul Islam and to take punitive and legal measures against all the personnel who were involved with this tragic incident.
I am praying to Almighty Allah to accept Shaharul Islam as a martyr of the Islamic movement and extending my profound sympathy and condolence to his family. May Allah make them capable to tolerate the shock of this tragic death of their beloved Shaharul Islam.”
