WAR CRIMES TRIAL; 4 witnesses to defend ATM Azhar, says ICT-1
Tuesday, 08 July 2014
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 lessened the number of defence witnesses to 4 to defend detained Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam, from a list of 15 that the defence team had earlier submitted. The tribunal asked defence lawyer Md Abdus Sobhan Tarafder to submit the list by July 10 and set July 13 to begin testifying. The tribunal passed the order after hearing from both the sides on the prosecution’s petition seeking denial of the list of 15.
A total of 19 prosecution witnesses were examined before the tribunal to prove all the six charges against ATM Azharul Islam.
The Bangladesh ICT Prosecution called 19 witnesses. The Defence sought to call 15. The Judges have allowed 4 witnesses. Another arbitrary decision. Is this equality? The Government speaks of fairness. Rushing to judgment once again. The farcical nature of these proceedings knows no bounds.
