ICT closes cross-examination of prosecution witness against Maulana Yusuf
Tuesday, 26 November 2013
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Tuesday closed the cross-examinations of the 12th prosecution witness in a war crimes case against senior Nayeb-e-Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Maulana AKM Yusuf.
The tribunal closed quizzing Abjal Hossain, as no conducting defence lawyer for Yusuf appeared before the tribunal to cross-examine him because of the ongoing blockade declared by the opposition.
On the beginning of the day’s proceeding, a junior lawyer for Yusuf, Gazi MH Tamim told the tribunal that he could not communicate with conducting lawyer, Mizanur Rahman.
The tribunal then asked the junior defence counsel to communicate with Mizanur and to appear before the tribunal at 2:00pm to cross-examine the witness.
Oherwise, the tribunal warned, the cross-examinations of the prosecution witness will be ended.
At 2:00pm, Tamim again stood up before the tribunal and submitted an application seeking a two-day adjournment on the ground of his senior’s personal difficulties.
Tamim submitted that a good number of vehicles were vandalized and set on blaze while two were killed in violence as the BNP-led opposition called a 48-hour blockade last night.
The tribunal said they were aware of the situation and that they were watching television reports. Then the tribunal rejected the adjournment petition and closed the cross-examination of the prosecution witness.
The tribunal also fixed Sunday (December 1) for examining the next prosecution witness.
