Professor Mujib renounces the Defence MoU with India; reiterates to sign Teesta River water sharing treaty

Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 7th April, 2017 expressing deep concern over the comment of the India’s External Affairs Ministry’s Secretary Jaishankar, as he said while talking to media that ‘An MoU can be signed on the defence assistance but no Teesta accord will be signed during the ongoing trip of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in India.

“Right now, the people of Bangladesh sincerely demand the due share of water from the Teesta River. The countrymen further expect the Teesta river water sharing treaty with India to ensure due share of water.

Keeping pending this long awaited pact, any other defence deal or MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) will not be accepted by the countrymen. It is the desire of the people of Bangladesh to implement the Teesta River water sharing treaty which has been promised earlier by the former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

We hope and expect that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will return home after signing the Teesta River water sharing treaty to ensure the due share of water for the people of Bangladesh.”
