31 Jamaat leaders including Thakurgaon district Ameer arrested; Secretary General protests

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 21st February, 2017 vehemently protesting the unjustifiable arrest of 31 leaders and activists including Thakurgaon district Jamaat Ameer Maulana Abdul Hakim, Kurigram district’s Bhurungamari Upazila Jamaat Ameer Azizul Haque and Secretary Maulana Abdul Bari and Nageshwari Upazila Jamaat Secretary Md. Abdul Hamid today.

“The government, just to attain its ill political interest, unjustifiably arrested 31 leaders and activists including Thakurgaon district Jamaat Ameer Maulana Abdul Hakim, Kurigram district’s Bhurungamari Upazila Jamaat Ameer Azizul Haque and Secretary Maulana Abdul Bari and Nageshwari Upazila Jamaat Secretary Md. Abdul Hamid. The Jamaat leaders and activists have been arrested without any reason.

The government is detaining the grassroots level leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami in order to implement their ill intention of destroying the leadership of the party. The government is continuing their arrest drive across the country to linger its undemocratic authoritarian rule. It is nothing but a fun when such an authoritarian government verbally talks about democracy. The government has become detached from the people because of its unprecedented oppression and torture. Such a detached government cannot stay in office for long by carrying out such repressive strategies. I am urging the countrymen to raise voice against the misrule of the government.

Finally, I am urging the authorities concerned to release all the detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami including Thakurgaon district Jamaat Ameer Maulana Abdul Hakim immediately.”
