Daily Amar Desh editor Mahmudur Rahman sent to jail; Secretary General demands immediate release

-Professor Mia Golam Parwar

In a statement issued on 1st October, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Parwar expressed his disappointment as a Dhaka Court sent Mahmudur Rahman, the editor of Daily Amar Desh to jail. In the statement, the Secretary General called for his immediate release.

He said that Mr. Mahmudur Rahman has always played a vocal role against the oppression and persecution of the fascist Sheikh Hasina government. As a fearless soldier, he made the people aware through his courageous writings against the misrule of the authoritarian government. This is why, he became the victim of the Awami League government’s wrath and vengeance. Subsequently, he was subjected to unspeakable oppression and torture and finally forced to leave the country. Even the publication of 'Daily Amar Desh', published under his editorship was stopped.

Recently, he returned home and surrendered to the court on September 29 showing respect for the law, and applied for a bail. But the court sent him to jail rejecting his bail plea. It is a matter of great shame for the nation, particularly in the changing situation of the country. We are shocked and surprised that he was not granted bail.

He said that every case filed during the tyrannical regime in the name of suppressing dissent was politically motivated. In this new Bangladesh, people want everyone to get bail, who had been charged in false, fabricated, and politically motivated cases by the tyrant Sheikh Hasina-led government. We are disappointed that Mr. Mahmudur Rahman was not granted bail.

We are urging the concerned authorities to release Mr. Mahmudur Rahman immediately and unconditionally in this false, fabricated, and politically motivated case.
