Urges authority to ensure people’s safety and security

Dhaka University student rape incident; Secretary General demands exemplary punishment of the rapists;

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 7 January 2020 protesting and condemning the brutal rape incident of a Dhaka University student in Kurmitola on Airport Road Sunday night.

“I am severely condemning and protesting the brutal rape student of a Dhaka University student in Kurmitola on Airport Road, which took place on Sunday night. We have no word to condemn the incident.

In recent times, the incidents of torture and rape against women and children have increased alarmingly. According to a report of Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) 1413 women raped in 2019; the number of victims were 732 in 2018. Besides, 76 women and children were murdered following the physical assault and rape. 10 women and children committed suicide after the experienced worst ever experiences of their lives. But in realities, the number of victims and casualties are significantly higher. At present, public life and properties are not safe. Family members are passing time in worries since their women left home for job or any other purposes. Such brutalities in broad daylight demonstrate the severe deterioration of law and order situation nationwide. A civilized country cannot function in such a way.

I am urging the concerned authorities to find out the criminals who were involved with the incident of raping Dhaka University student and also to ensure his exemplary punishment. I am also calling upon the authority to undertake all out measures to facilitate citizen’s safe transportation and movement in Dhaka and other places around the country.
