Detained son was not released even to see his deceased mother for the last time

Shamsul Islam demands immediate release of Chittagong district Jamaat leaders

Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Maulana Shamsul Islam has issued the following statement on 26th July, 2017 protesting and condemning the unjust arrest of 7 Jamaat members and activists including Chittagong North organizational district’s Secretary Professor Nurul Amin Chowdhury and Hathazari Upazila’s former Ameer Shahidul Islam.

“The aforesaid members and activists of the Chittagong North organizational district were assembled to discuss about a marriage ceremony on 25th July. Police unjustifiably arrested them from that spot. Following the arrest, police started an intentional campaign claiming that they have arrested them from an unlawful gathering. But practically they did not hold any political meeting or program.

After arresting 7 Jamaat members and activists including Chittagong North organizational district’s Secretary Professor Nurul Amin Chowdhury, Mr. Chowdhury’s mother Salema Khatun (died) on 6.30 in the evening (Innalillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun). Even after this tragic incident, police kept them detained inhumanly. This incident once again proved how much brutally the government carried out its repression against the opposition men. Such an inhuman crackdown can never be expected in a democratic country. If the government has minimum human values, they would release Professor Nurul Amin Chowdhury to see his deceased mother for the last time and also to take part in her funeral. I am urging my fellow citizens of the country to raise voice against the inhuman oppression and torture of the government.

Finally, I am calling upon the authorities concerned to release all the detained members and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami including Professor Nurul Amin Chowdhury immediately.”
