Jamaat’s Central Executive Committee meeting held

Jamaat Ameer reiterates the demand for holding election under caretaker government; criticises government for unprecedented price hike of essentials

-Dr. Shafiqur Rahman

A meeting of the central Executive Committee of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami held today with Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman in the chair. The meeting discussed country’s overall situation. Addressing the program, Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has said, according to the constitution, Islam is the state and official religion of Bangladesh. 90 percent of the total populations are Muslim. But violating the constituion and the religious spirit of the majority people, the government has taken decision to issue license in favor of alcohol. The authority also allowed to open bar and alcohol shop in a place where just about 100 consumers are found. Govenrment’s such decision is unconstitutional and unislamic. The countrymen will not accept the decision and it must be revoked.

Jamaat Ameer said the government is repeatedly increasing the price of cooking oil, LPG gas, and other necessary items. The prices of all commodities are on the rise. People’s sufferings know no bounds due to the price hike. The incumbent government is not an elected one and as such, they do not feel any liabilities towards the people. No discipline exists in the administration. The nation is witnessing the upsurge of bribery, corruption, and other irregularities.

There is no rule of law, democracy and human rights in the country. The people are not allwed to express their views. Efforts are going to eliminate the opposition parties. They are not allowed to hold procession, meetings or rallies. The constitution is being ignored and defied in broad day light. Jamaat-Shibir men and other opposition leaders and activists are being kept behind the bar unjustifiably. It becomes a routine work of the govenrment to harass and detain the opposition people. The nation has turned into a bigger prison.

The government has hijacked people’s voting rights. In last 12 years, no fair and credible election held under this regime. The people donot want to see any more farcical election. Fair election is possible only under a caretaker govenrment.

I am urgig all political parties and the people to launch strict movement to press the demadn for holding election under a caretaker regime. Besides, we are calling upon the concenred authorities to stop the ongoing repression and to release all detained leaders and activists including party’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Maulana ANM Shamsul Islam, Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Porwar, Assistant Secretary General Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan immediately.
