Mia Golam Porwar elected as Jamaat's Secretary General

Former member of Parliament Professor Mia Golam Porwar has been elected as the Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami for 2020-2022 session. Today, on 26 December 2019, Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman conducted his oath as the new Secretary General of the organization.

Professor Mia Golam Porwar was elected member of Parliament from Khulna-5 (Fultola & Dumuria) constituency in the 8th national parliamentary election held on 1st October 2001. In his 5-year tenure, under the 4-party alliance government, he has implemented development programs worth of 300 crore taka. No MPs of this constituency could not make such development in last 30 years. His uncompromised role against terrorism and militancy reduced the reign of terror in this area. The people of the area started living peacefully for his courageous role.

Professor Mia Golam Porwar was born in Shiromoni village in Fultola Upazila under Khulna district on 8 January of 1959. He has his father and mother, 5 brothers, 5 sisters, two daughters and two sons. He passed SSC from Shiromoni High School, HSC from BL University College and B. Com (Hons) from Azam Khan Commerce University College.

He got involved with the politics since his student life. He joined JSD Chhatra League in 1974. In 1977, he received invitation of the Islamic movement and immediately joined the Islamic student politics. He discharged duties as the Fultota thana President, Khulna Sadar thana president, BL College President, Commerce College President and the secretary of Khulna city Chhatrashibir for 1984-85 session.

After completing the student life, he started his professional career through journalism and professorship. He served Daily Sangram as the Khulna district correspondent for several years. During this period, he was elected as the member of the Khulna Press club executive committee bagging the highest number of votes. Later on, he also worked as the lecturer in the Khulna Islamic College. Following the student life, he joined in Jamaat-e-Islami.

He discharged duty as the Khulna City Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami from 1996 to 2011. Since April, 2012 till November 2016, he served the organization as the Assistant Secretary General. Since November, 2016, he served Jamaat as its Nayeb-e-Ameer. Since January 2017, he performed duty as the central president of Sramik Kollan Federation.

Earlier, he contested in the national election of 1991 from Khulna-5 constituency. He participated in the mayoral election of Khulna city corporation in 1994 and gained huge popularity and public acceptance.

From 1996 to 2001, he was the co-convener of Khulna district and Khulna city 4 party alliance committee. In the national election of 2001, he bagged more than one lac votes and became the parliament member. He was the first initiator and convener of Khulna-Jessore region of the National Coordination Committee which was formed against controversial labor code, 1994.

The incumbent authoritarian government became severely vindictive against Professor Mia Golam Porwar for his outstanding popularity and uncompromising role. He was firstly arrested on 30 June, 2010 from a procession in Khulna. He was re-arrested for several times and faced inhuman torture and repression. During the tenure of this government, he remained behind the bar for almost 5 years. He faced brutal repression and torture while police have taken him into remand for long 30 days.

Professor Mia Golam Porwar discharged his duties in the field of social welfare and spreading education. He visited several countries including Japan, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Britain and Turkey.
