Arrest drives and arson continues against Jamaat leaders; Professor Mujib condemns

Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 29 December 2018 protesting and condemning the unjustifiable arrest of Panchagar district Jamaat Ameer Maulana Abdul Khaleq, Dinajpur South organizational district’s Secretary Muhaddis Enamul Haque, Dhaka city’s advocate Habibur Rahman and the incident of arson in the houses of Noakhali district’s Sonaimuri Upazila Jamaat Secretary and Sonaimuri Upazila council’s Vice chairman Shahabuddin and his brother.

“Police have arrested Panchagar district Jamaat Ameer Maulana Abdul Khaleq, Dinajpur South organizational district’s Secretary Muhaddis Enamul Haque, Dhaka city’s advocate Habibur Rahman while the miscreants set fire at the houses of Noakhali district’s Sonaimuri Upazila Jamaat Secretary and Sonaimuri Upazila council’s Vice chairman Shahabuddin and his brother. I am condemning all these incidents.

The aforesaid incidents proved the prevailing anarchic situation of the country. The countrymen are extremely tensed as they are anticipating more vulnerable situation in the upcoming days. I am urging the concerned authorities to resist such destructive consequences.

The government is detaining leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami from different places across the country as they are hatching conspiracy to destroy the leadership of this organization. Muhaddis Enamul Haq and Advocate Habibur Rahman had been arrested when they went to the returning officer’s office to conduct their election related activities. They have been detained to create obstruction in the task of electioneering. The government has arrested hundreds of thousands of people similarly and deprived them from their rights to cast votes. I am calling upon the countrymen to form massive resistance against the conspiracies of the government.

Finally, I am urging the concerned authorities to release Maulana Abdul Khaleq and all other detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami. I am also pressing demand to ensure exemplary punishments of those miscreants who had set fire in the house of Jamaat leader Shahabuddin and his brothers in Sonaimuri under Noakhalid district.
