Jamaat leader Professor Rafiqul Islam arrested; Professor Mujib condemns

Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former member of the Parliament Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 24 December 2018 protesting and condemning the unjustifiable arrest of Jamaat’s central organizing secretary and assistant regional coordinator of Rajshahi region Professor Rafiqul Islam and two other leaders.

“Professor Rafiqul Islam has been arrested today in a bid to decrease the possibility of holding a free, fair and credible election. I am vehemently condemning this arrest incident.

Even after the deployment of the armed forces, the arrest drives against the opposition men are not stopped. Neither the 20 party alliance’s candidates nor the independent candidates are spared from such crackdown. Police and the ruling party cadres are jointly obstructing the election campaign of the opposition candidates. The countrymen expected a better atmosphere following the army deployment.

But the situation is still worrying. Rather the situation is getting deteriorated. If such situation continues, fair and credible election will not possibly take place. It is anticipated that the upcoming December 30 election would be another farce as it was in 2014.

To avert from any such farce, I am urging the concerned authorities to release all the detained leaders and activists of 20 party alliances including Professor Rafiqul Islam immediately.
