Jamaat Ameer recalls the tragic events of 28th October; urges to bring the killers to the justice

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 27th October, 2024 recalling the martyrs who had sacrificed their lives on 28th October of 2006

28th October of 2006 was the last day of the 4-party alliance government. On that day, the Awami hooligans created a violent mayhem across the country by using sicks, domestic and other lethal weapons. Jamaat-e-Islami arranged a meeting at the North gate of national mosque Baitul Mukarram. Since that morning, Jamaat leaders and activists began stage making procedures. But suddenly, Awami goons attacked the Jamaat declared program. As the meeting finally began, the cadres and terrorists move forward towards the stage along with their lethal weapons. The then Ameer of Jamaat, Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami was the chief guest of the program. 14 party people had the target to kill him and other central leaders. 14 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir were killed and several hundred became injured in the daylong barbaric attack in Polton and its surrounding area. Not only Paltan, they created violent anarchy and mayhems across the country. They murdered many people and vandalized hundreds of establishments nationwide. Even the Awami cadres danced on the body of the deceased. People all around the world witnessed the heinous activities including dancing upon a dead body by the Awami League cadres. In words, all these incidents were preplanned crimes against humanity.

The incidents of 28th October will be always regarded as the darkest chapter in the history of Bangladeshi politics. These tragic events paved the way for one eleven and the subsequent state of emergency. The process of de-politization also began in the country. Since then, the tyrannical authorities snatched people's basic rights away including their rights to movement, rights to hold procession, voting rights, rights to assembly, human rights, rules of law and justice as a whole.

Jamaat demanded judicial probe into the brutal events of 28th October and subsequently cases were lodged against the miscreants. But after coming to the office, the incumbent government withdrew the case and took the side in favor of the killers. Finally on last 5th August, the nation became free from fascism following a massive revolution of the students and the general masses. We believe that, justice will be established in the country due to the changes of the plots and the murderers of the 28th October will be brought to the justice.

I am urging the leaders and activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami to commemorate the martyrs of 28th October and also to arrange discussion program to mark the day. I am also extending my deep sympathy to those injured and crippled victims, who have been suffering pains till today.
