Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 13th August 2024 recalling and remembering the contribution of Jamaat-e-Islami’s former Nayeb-e-Ameer, former lawmaker, renowned Islamic scholar and preacher Allama Delawar Hossain Sayedee.
"On the night of August 14, 2023, Jamaat-e-Islami’s former Nayeb-e-Ameer, former lawmaker, renowned Islamic scholar, and preacher Allama Delawar Hossain Sayedee died in the prison cell of PG Hospital due to medical negligence. Earlier, he had been brought from Kashimpur Jail to Dhaka because of his sickness. However, the on-duty doctors and the hospital authorities did not take proper steps to ensure his treatment. There have been many reports of medical negligence. Even, his children and wife were not allowed to meet him for the last time. Finally, he died in PG Hospital on that day.
After the death of Allama Delawar Hossain Sayedee, the administration did not allow to arrange any funeral prayer in Dhaka. Hundreds of people were injured by police firing, tear gas, sound grenades, and gunfire in the hospital compound as they had expressed their sincere desire to hold a funeral prayer in Dhaka. Finally, the body of Allama Delawar Hossain Sayedee was taken to his hometown in Pirojpur and the funeral and burial were completed over there. Millions of Islam-loving people prayed to Allah with tearful eyes for Allama Sayedee.
Allama Saidi is no longer with us. He left his life and work as an example for us. For more than half a century, he has expounded the Qur'an at home and abroad. Numerous speeches and video footage of him on Islamic ideologies are widely circulated on social media and people are attracted to those speeches. He has played an important role as a member of the Parliament, alongside chairman, and member of various parliamentary committees. He has written many pieces of Islamic literature, Tafseer and Sirat which will show people the way of light for ages. He has established many religious and educational institutions that will continue to produce Islamic preachers and explainers of the holy Quran. They will complete the unfished works of Allama Sayedee, insha Allah. I remember his contribution with deep respect.
His hope was martyrdom. May Allah accept his death as a martyr's death. I appeal to the leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir and the fellow countrymen to come forward and join the movement to establish a welfare Islamic state, which was his lifetime’s dream.”
