Launch capsize in Shitalakkhya river: 27 bodies recovered; 13 people killed during nor ‘westers; Jamaat Ameer condoles

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following message of condolence on 5 April 2021 expressing deep shock as 27 bodies were recovered after a Munshiganj-bound launch, which capsized in the Shitalakkhya riverinNarayanganj and in another incidents 13 peoplewere killed when falling trees crushed them during nor'westers in Gaibandha and other districts.

A Munshiganj-bound launchnamed Sabit Al Hasan, carrying over 50 passengers, capsized in the Shitalakkhya river near the third Shitalakkhya Bridge at Koylaghat of Syedpur area under Narayanganj district when it was hit by a "coaster tankerlast evening. So far 27 dead bodies have been recovered from the spot and several are still missing.

Whereas 13 peoplewere killed when falling trees crushed them during nor'westers in Gaibandha district’s Polashbari, Sundarganj and FulchoriUpazila and other districts of the country. I am expressing deep shock at this incident and extending condolence to the mournful families. I am also urging the concerned authorities to take effective measures to rescue the missing passengers.

I am calling upon the authorities concerned to undertake strict legal measures to find out the real reason behind the launch capsize incident and also to pay due compensation to the victims of the capsize and nor ’westersimmediately.
