Secretary General demands for UN-backed investigation and justice for Bangladeshi citizens murdered by Indian BSF at borders

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former Member of Parliament Professor Mia Golam Porwar issued a statement on March 9 expressing deep concern over the continued killings of Bangladeshi citizens by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) and demanding a fair investigation under the United Nations.

In the statement, he said that on the night of March 6, a young Bangladeshi named Shahid was shot dead by the BSF inside Indian territory near the Sylhet border. Similarly, on March 8 (Saturday) night, another Bangladeshi youth named Al-Amin (36) was killed by BSF at the Bhitargarh border in Panchagarh. The deceased Shahed was the son of Mosahid Ali from Mongolpur Alubari village in Kanaighat Upazila, Sylhet, while Al-Amin was the son of Suruj Ali from Jinnatpara village in Harivasha Union, Panchagarh Sadar Upazila.

Furthermore, he stated that on February 28, the BSF shot and killed a Bangladeshi youth named Al-Amin at the Putia border in Kasba Upazila of Brahmanbaria district. Additionally, on February 27, another Bangladeshi youth named Billal was severely tortured and critically injured by the BSF at the Maheshpur border in Jhenaidah district. In 2024 alone, the BSF has killed 19 Bangladeshis, including Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) member Sipahi Mohammad Rais Uddin.

We strongly condemn and protest these killings by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) and express our deep concern over these incidents.

He further stated, "We are observing with deep concern that the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) frequently carries out killings along the Bangladesh border without any justification. Despite repeated promises from India to bring border killings down to zero, such incidents of murders continue to rise.

According to a report by the human rights organization ‘Odhikar’, from 2009 to November 2024, the BSF has killed 588 Bangladeshis along the Bangladesh-India border, while 773 others have been injured. The report also states that 2009 saw the highest number of border killings. Despite 588 documented killings by the BSF over the past 16 years, human rights organizations working on border violence confirm that not a single case has been fully investigated or prosecuted to date. The failure to ensure justice for these unlawful killings is really concerning. Such situation has been created due to the Bangladeshi government's weak and submissive foreign policy, which has encouraged India to continue its border killings.

He further emphasized, "The people of Bangladesh have always sought a friendly relationship with their neighboring countries. We hope that the Indian government will put an end to these unwarranted border killings and conduct a fair and impartial investigation into the deaths of Bangladeshis, including Al-Amin and Shahed, to hold the perpetrators accountable.

At the same time, we demand an international investigation and justice for all Bangladeshi killings through the United Nations. We strongly urge Bangladesh's interim government to take necessary actions in this regard."
