Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar said in a statement issued on January 12, 2025 calling for withdrawal of increased VAT and supplementary duty,

“The prices of daily necessities are continuously increasing. The government has not been able to take effective initiatives to control the prices of essential goods. In the existing situation, people are struggling to meet their household expenses. Moreover, the increase in VAT and supplementary duty imposed on more than a hundred products has created an uncomfortable situation among the people. Due to the imposed duty, the daily living expenses of the people will increase massively . While increasing taxes, the government should have taken into consideration that there should be no negative impact on the living conditions of the common people. But it seems that the government has not paid attention to the matter. "We are calling for the immediate withdrawal of VAT and supplementary duties imposed on hundreds of products to prevent additional pressure on the lives of ordinary people."
