Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former MP, Professor Mia Golam Porwar issued the following statement on 17th December, 2024 congratulating the people of Bangladesh for the restoration of their rights as the High Court in its historic verdict today repealed the Fifteenth Amendment of the Constitution.
"On June 30, 2011, the Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution was passed in the National Parliament. Through this amendment, the people's right to vote and the election system were completely destroyed. This amendment paved the way for seizing the power without elections. As a result, no elections were held in Bangladesh in 2014, 2018, or 2024. What happened instead was mere mockery in the name of elections.
Resultantly, through the Fifteenth Amendment, democracy and the democratic system were destroyed. Today on 17th December, with the verdict and observations of the High Court, the rights of the people have been restored once again. This is another victory for the people. We sincerely congratulate and convey our best wishes to the citizens of the country for the restoration of their voting rights through this legal battle."
