Secretary General expresses deep concern over the overall flood situation in various districts of the country

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former MP Professor Mia Golam Parwar has issued the following statement on 21st August, 2024 expressing deep concern over the overall flood situation in Comilla, Noakhali, Feni, Moulvibazar, Habiganj and other districts.

In a statement, he said, “Floods in greater Comilla region have taken a dire shape as India opened Dumbur dam in its Tripura state. The Indian government has created a situation to drown the people of greater Comilla region of Bangladesh by opening this dam. So far 7 people have been reportedly killed. We are deeply concerned about this inhuman act of the Indian government.

In the last few days, heavy rains and landslides from the upstream have caused severe floods in Comilla, Noakhali, Feni, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Chittagong, Rangamati, Khagrachari and other districts. Vast areas of the country have been flooded. Noakhali's Maizdi Upazila has accumulated knee-deep water. In all the 9 upazilas of the district, houses, rural roads and educational institutions have been submerged by flood water. 20 lakh people have become stuck in water. Flooding occurred due to overflowing of Muhuri, Kahua and Ceylonya rivers in Feni district. The waters of Muhuri, Kahua and Ceylonia rivers are flowing 90 cm above the danger zone. Such overflowing of water has not been seen in last 50 years. 310 mm of rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours in these districts which is the highest ever. People in all areas of Phulgazi, Parashuram and Chagalnaya upazilas have been waterlogged. Many people have water in their homes. More than 40 villages of Sadar Union, Anandpur, Munsirhat, Amjadhat Union of Fulgazi Upazila and more than 45 villages including Mirzanagar, Chithlia, Buxmahmud and Town of Parshuram Upazila have been submerged in water.

Meanwhile, numerous residential houses, rural roads and educational institutions of several unions of Kulaura, Juri, Rajnagar, Kamalganj and Sadar upazilas of Moulvibazar district have been submerged in water due to continuous heavy rain. At least two lakh people have become waterlogged. Vehicles are unable to move. Roads and houses have sunk. Crops, rice fields, fruit orchards are submerged in water. Pets are not available. In some areas, the flood water has touched the roofs of people's houses.

I express deep concern over the dire flood situation in several districts including Comilla, Noakhali, Feni, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Chittagong, Rangamati, Khagrachari. I strongly urge the government to quickly rescue the people trapped in the water and also to take them in a safe place. I am also calling upon to send various food items including dry food, cash, medicines and medical supplies and medical teams to the affected areas. At the same time, I request the fellow countrymen to stand by the flood victims."
