Secretary General expresses deep concern over the terrorist attack on the election rally in Narsingdi

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former Member of Parliament Mia Golam Porwar issued a statement today, 4 December, expressing deep concern, strong condemnation, and protest over the terrorist attack on the election rally of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami–nominated candidate for Narsingdi-2 (Palash), Maulana Amjad Hossain.

In the statement, he said, “I express deep concern, strong condemnation, and protest over the heinous terrorist attack on the election rally of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami nominated candidate for Narsingdi-2 (Palash), Maulana Amjad Hossain. On 3 December (Wednesday) afternoon, armed terrorists under the banner of BNP launched a pre-planned attack on a peaceful public gathering organized by Union Jamaat at the Sheikharchar bus stand in Meherpara Union. Around 50–60 terrorists equipped with local weapons and firearms carried out an indiscriminate attack on the leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, disrupting the entire gathering.

In this brutal attack, Jamaat’s nominated candidate and Narsingdi District Secretary, Maulana Amjad Hossain, along with at least 30 others, were injured. Several among them were critically wounded and have been admitted to Narsingdi District Hospital. In addition, three Jamaat activists are still missing, which has made the situation even more alarming. Such terrorist activities in the name of political rivalry constitute a gross violation of the democratic process and electoral code of conduct.

He further said that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami believes in peaceful, democratic, and justice-based political practice. A certain quarter is attempting to destabilize the democratic environment by launching terrorist attacks in the election field—this is something the nation will not tolerate.

He added, “I pray for the speedy recovery of all injured leaders and activists and express sympathy to their families. At the same time, I call upon Jamaat leaders and activists across the country to remain patient, disciplined, and organizationally united, and also to continue the peaceful efforts for securing democratic rights.”

Urging the concerned authorities, he said, “The terrorists involved in this attack must be arrested immediately and brought under the law to face exemplary punishment. Urgent measures must be taken by law enforcement agencies to rescue the three missing activists. Equal opportunities and security for all candidates must be ensured to protect the electoral environment, and strict action must be taken against the forces attempting to disrupt the election process through acts of terrorism, he added.”
