Repeated demand for declaring flood-hit Haor area as ‘disaster zone’

Secretary General calls for judicial investigation to unearth the corruption in dam construction projects

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 3rd May, 2017 in regards to the temporary suspension of three engineers of Water Development Board who were involved with the construction and repairing tasks of the embankments in Haor region.

“By temporarily suspending three engineers of Water Development Board who were involved with the construction and repairing tasks of the embankments in Haor region, actually the government is trying to conceal its utmost failure.

Country’s economy already faced huge losses due to flash flood and torrential rain in Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj, Moulovibazar, Kishorganj, Brahmanbaria and Netrokona district. The unfortunate victims of the flood affected areas are passing days miserably in different kinds of shortages and lacking.

The contractors who have got the tender of constructing the embankments are highly blessed by the ruling party. In some occasion, they work a bit but loot a lot while in other occasions, they almost embezzled the entire amount of money. By committing such unprecedented looting and corruption, they have pushed some 2 million peoples of the Haor region towards unbearable disaster and subsequent death.

Road Transportation and Bridge Minister and ruling party’s general secretary Obaidul Quader already admitted the fact of mountainous corruption of the ruling party men in an open speech. This incident once again proved that to the ruling Awami League; public interest, life, dignity and property is not the priority. Rather their key target is to loot the public properties. Losing the crops, domestic animals and cattle, the flood affected people are passing days like a nightmare as their sufferings have no bound.

We have repeatedly urged to declare the Haor region as a ‘disaster zone’ but the government is paying no heed to our call. So far, no significant initiative is seen from the part of the authority to provide relief, medical treatment and rehabilitation activities.

I am again raising the demand of declaring the Haor region as a ‘disaster zone.’ Besides, I am calling upon the concerned authorities to conduct a judicial investigation in order to find out all the corrupted officials who were involved with the embankment construction and repair project the Haor region.”
