Political Career
A public leader Dr Shafiq started his involvement with politics in his student life by joining Chatra League Jasad. Then he joined Bangladesh Chatra league in 1973.

Life in Islamic Movement:
After the first step of the largest Islamic Student movement in Bangladesh Bangladesh Islami Chatra Shibir he left his previous political life and chose Islamic movement. He by degrees became president of Sylhet medical college and president of Sylhet City wing. He was detained in 1982 in his student life.

In Greater Islamic Movement:
After ending a successful student life, he stepped into the national politics by joining Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. He became Ameer of Sylhet District and City. He was selected as a member of Central Majlish-e-Shura, Central Working Council and Central Executive Council. Dr Shafiq was nominated as an Assistant Secretary General in 2010 and subsequently in 2016, he was appointed as the Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaate-e-Islami. On 12 November of 2019, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman was elected as Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami with the direct votes of its members. He took his oath as the Ameer of the organization for 2020-2022 session on 5 December, 2019 and since then he has been discharging his duties with due sincerity and integrity.
